A carnet is a legal document permitting temporary export of professional equipment — instruments, audio gear, lighting, props — across international borders without paying taxes or duties.
Carnets are necessary when crossing international borders with equipment temporarily. The “Personal Portable Musical Instrument Exception” may apply if you’re traveling with personal instruments in baggage to EU countries — provided the equipment travels with you throughout the journey.
UK carnets are issued by The London Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Required information includes carnet holder details, responsible traveling party members, intended equipment use, detailed manifest with serial numbers and values, and country itinerary.
Issue fees typically range £350–£450 plus VAT. Carnets remain valid for one year from issue and permit multiple trips within that period.
At the UK border, present the green cover plus a yellow exportation voucher and counterfoil. In EU countries, use white importation vouchers. Keep carnets stamped properly at every crossing — incorrect completion triggers customs charges.
